      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Uncommon Schools (Brooklyn, NY) in Jun 2018

      Interview

I applied online and was contacted within a few weeks. I was asked to respond to a few preliminary questions over email, than was invited to an interview/immersion day soon after. I was asked to prepare to teach a lesson based on a lesson plan that they provided me with. I'd recommend to memorize it so that you can be adaptable while teaching. As a teacher, all lesson plans will be prepared for you, so this should be something you're okay with. They also suggested that I read a bit of "Teach Like a Champion" by Doug Lemov, a book that informs their pedagogy strongly (I'd strongly recommend reading a bit to get a feel for it). The interview day was scheduled from 8:30am to 12:15pm. School leaders demonstrate teaching techniques that they'd like you to use, then you get time to practice with a partner. The school leaders/principals are HUGE on positive feedback, which is really nice. They want to make sure you can incorporate their advice at every attempt. After the practice, each candidate gets to teach a bit of their lesson to the group of school leaders and other candidates. The school leaders offer feedback as you teach, often pausing you to offer advice and then asking you to repeat that portion of the lesson. Again, incorporating their feedback is really important. After everyone has done their lesson, there is a one on one interview with a school leader. This lasts about a half hour. They want to make sure that you are a good fit for the school and are comfortable with their teaching style. Finally, you are given a content exam. This is an opportunity to show you know what an exemplary student answer would look like. Throughout the whole process, everyone was really nice and supportive. I received a response within three days.
