      Data Scientist Interview

      Nov 30, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Uptake (Chicago, IL)

      Interview

I read these other reviews before the interview and was surprised how accurate they were. The whole process was long winded, bizarre, and completely impersonal. During my phone interview and my 3 hour in-person interviews, there were about 4 minutes TOTAL to ask them any questions about anything. This was done on purpose and they were so focused on forcing the whole interview in a short period of time that the whole company seems completely cold and above being evaluated by the interviewee. In one of the in-person sessions, the guy pretty much refused to introduce himself because they "had too much to cover" in asking me questions. Seems like a friendly person to work with. Part of this interview process is an 8-hr take home project that you then present. I don't even know why you are asked to present and I wouldn't waste much time prepping a ppt deck as they have no interest in it. They take notes the whole time and dont even watch your presentation or comment on it. In the end, they are more focused on the efficiency of your code (writing a statement twice instead of using a function) than what you actually presented for your analysis. It is really bizarre that they would focus on that aspect of your work when it was a 8-hr take home project. In addition, the whole process was evaluating if you answer data science related problems more or less correctly. For a company that supposedly hires the best talent, it was really surprising that the whole process focused on this and nothing about how well you pick up knew skills (a key component for a data scientist in my opinion), company fit, how you interact with others in a work setting, etc. The only take away I got from this is that nobody knows how to work together or have a healthy work environment, which is funny because that is what all the comments from past/current employees say.

      Interview

The entire interview process moving from initial phone conversation to final round is fairly short, however, they do a bad job in terms of staying in touch and keeping the candidate informed is reflective of how unorganized this company is. Interview process consists of a phone call, a take home challenge, and three rounds of technical interview session. One round consisting of explaining the project and the other round consisting of technical questions on the spot. During the take home challenge, you are given 8 hours to complete meaning that if you get the e-mail at 8pm be ready to do an all nighter. Also, make sure to check your e-mail consistently because your time begins when the challenge reaches your inbox. Please think twice before applying here - probably is not worth your time.
