      Data Science Interview

      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Uptake (Chicago, IL)

      Interview

The whole process took more than 2 months. I met one of the working data scientists at a Career Fair. I talked to the Data Scientist and he liked my profile and got me an interview. First step was to qualify a telephonic round (30 Minutes) in which I was asked to describe the machine learning project that I had put on my resume. Some follow up questions related to the models I used and the evaluation metrics. This was very basic. Anybody with a basic knowledge of Data Science can clear this round. Second round included a Data Science case study with very high dimension. As described earlier, the size was 200,000 entries with 500 features. They give you a problem statement and ask you write models that make predictions based on the problem statement. It would be really easy if you have actually worked with heavy data sets from Kaggle. I was called for the onsite interview at Chicago office which is really amazing and huge. My first round there was a statistical problem analysis question. This is the round where I messed up. I realized that my stats knowledge was not as par with their expectations. But I did not lose confidence and tried to figure out ways to answer their questions. The second onsite interview was basically the demo of your case study. The interviewers take notes while you are presenting. Make sure you clean your code and present it properly like in a Jupyter notebook or similar. The interviewers asked me a couple of questions on the evaluation metrics and some model specific questions. The third onsite interview was like a stress buster for me. It was a culture fit interview where the interviewers might ask you some behavioral questions. I though they tried to know me personally about my passion and vision about my career ahead. Then, within a week, they scheduled a phone call and on phone, they offered me a position. They gave me honest feedback which I completely agreed upon. It is a great company with extremely talented people providing machine learning solutions to their customers across the globe. I recommend appearing for the interview. You can explore your problem solving capabilities especially with the Case study assignment.

      Interview

The entire interview process moving from initial phone conversation to final round is fairly short, however, they do a bad job in terms of staying in touch and keeping the candidate informed is reflective of how unorganized this company is. Interview process consists of a phone call, a take home challenge, and three rounds of technical interview session. One round consisting of explaining the project and the other round consisting of technical questions on the spot. During the take home challenge, you are given 8 hours to complete meaning that if you get the e-mail at 8pm be ready to do an all nighter. Also, make sure to check your e-mail consistently because your time begins when the challenge reaches your inbox. Please think twice before applying here - probably is not worth your time.
