      Data Scientist Interview

      Mar 3, 2019
      Anonymous employee
      Chicago, IL
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Uptake (Chicago, IL) in Feb 2019

      Interview

First step was a ~25 minute phone conversation with a recruiter, quickly going over my experience and one of my data science projects, not getting into the weeds but quickly explaining the use case and some of the technical considerations at a high level. There was time to ask questions at the end. The next phone call was ~45 minutes and involved going over a data science project in more depth with two data scientists. I sent over a link to my code on Github beforehand and the recruiter also sent over an email explaining what to expect in the conversation. We walked through the project from problem definition through model selection and deployment, stopping to answer questions as they came up. Definitely an emphasis on explaining your decision-making, how you weighed the tradeoffs or compromises, and potential improvements to whatever you've done. Next step was a 8 hour case study. The email explaining the assignment (you get this beforehand) is pretty thorough, and the pdf that comes with the assignment clearly outlines the deliverables and FAQ's. I felt this was pretty tough and did some follow-up work immediately after my first submission at 8 hours. It tests your ability to build models around a business case and build a presentation for a client. It was a classification project with messy data, and it's probably worth making your work as easy as possible for someone else to follow along. Final step is an on-site interview (or Skype if remote) with 3 parts: going over the presentation and case study work with two data scientists, another 45 minute technical case study with two other data scientists, and a 45 minute cultural/behavioral conversation with another data scientist. Like with the technical phone conversation, there was a lot of emphasis on explaining your decision making and considering technical AND business tradeoffs when going over the take-home assignment. The second case study was thorough, and the cultural interview was about getting to know you and your style of working with other people. There was plenty of time to ask questions throughout the process, and the emails before each stage were pretty good about telling you what to expect in the interview(s).

      Interview

The entire interview process moving from initial phone conversation to final round is fairly short, however, they do a bad job in terms of staying in touch and keeping the candidate informed is reflective of how unorganized this company is. Interview process consists of a phone call, a take home challenge, and three rounds of technical interview session. One round consisting of explaining the project and the other round consisting of technical questions on the spot. During the take home challenge, you are given 8 hours to complete meaning that if you get the e-mail at 8pm be ready to do an all nighter. Also, make sure to check your e-mail consistently because your time begins when the challenge reaches your inbox. Please think twice before applying here - probably is not worth your time.
