      Teacher Interview

      Aug 13, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at VOICE Charter School (New York, NY) in Jan 2013

      Interview

Multiple phone interviews followed by an very long in-person interview. The phone interviews were mostly informative. The interviewer described the philosophies of the school and then asked situational questions to determine how the interviewee would act in accordance with the school's philosophies. The in-person interview was extremely long at 6 hours. Unfortunately, the vast majority of that time was spent waiting. In total, about an hour was spent with the interview team. Candidates had to teach a sample lesson, receive feedback, and then teach the lesson again. The team of interviewers was very aggressive in their questioning technique - they actually seemed to want the interviewee to feel uncomfortable.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

"What would you do if X happened, and why?" There were about 30 of these types of situational questions between the two phone interviews and the in-person interview. There was no spontaneous or genuine conversation in the in-person interview, whereas the phone interviewers were welcoming of questions and input.

      Interview

Started with a demo lesson with the team, then I had an interview with the Deans, then an interview with the principal. The communication via email throughout the interview process was easy, and some questions asked were easy, some were more difficult. It felt like a standard interview

      Interview

I had a real easy phone interview first. Then they had me come in for an interview that said would start at about 8 am and could end anytime - really. They had no idea when it would end. 11 am? 2 pm? 4 pm? Nothing. Anyway, they had me teach for about 5 minutes and then they seemed to whittle down the candidates (many candidates come on one day). I then taught again for about 5 minutes, but I forgot that this time they said would give me suggestions while I was teaching - that's right, while I'm in front of the students. Pay attention to that if you make the second round. Also, it's sweltering hot in the lower grade building on a hot day. Oh and bring things to do - I spent literally hours just waiting for them to get the next part of the day ready.
