      Quantitative Strategist Interview

      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Virtu Financial (Dublin, Dublin) in Jun 2013

      Interview

I was contacted by a recruiter about this company in my last semester of grad school. After I expressed possible interest regarding the position, she conducted a telephone screening and arranged to meet with me in person to discuss the stages of the interview. The stages of the interview involving the actual company were conducted across 3 days (spanning approximately 2 weeks for the whole process). First, I came in to their office and completed two different IQ tests. About three days later, they had me come back and be interviewed 1-on-1 by a few employees. Each employee basically chatted with me about my background/skill set for 10-15 minutes and then proceeded to go through 2-3 "brain teasers" with me. The brain teasers ranged in difficulty from pretty easy to quite difficult, though I completed almost all of them successfully. That step of the interview took approximately 3-4 hours. A few days later, I get a call from the recruiter telling me they wanted me to do a "final" interview 1-on-1 with the managing director of the office. That stage of the interview was a pretty standard interview (i.e. no more brain teasers) if a little bit more informal than usual and I thought I had a pretty good exchange with him. About 48 hours after that last interview, I get a call from the recruiter telling me that I didn't get the job. I was told that the director really liked me but that there were "some concerns expressed" about how I would "fit in to the company culture." Now, maybe I am sensitive because I am a woman who works in traditionally male dominated fields, but when I hear "company culture" with respect to financial companies my first and only thought is usually "boy's club." I might have been less inclined to get that impression if I hadn't been aware that the only woman working in that office was the office manager/administrative assistant. So, basically I walked away feeling about 85% certain that they either consciously or subconsciously didn't feel like I would "fit in" with their nearly all male workforce.

      Question 1

Just google "finance interview questions", "trading interview questions" and "finance interview example problems" and read like the top 5 results for each. That will give you a pretty accurate idea of the types of brain teasers they ask.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Virtu Financial (Dublin, Dublin) in Aug 2025

      Interview

The process began with an online Python test, where I scored 10/10. After that, I had a short 20-minute HR interview including two brain-teaser questions, which went well. The final stage was a one-hour interview focused on discussing my CV and past projects in detail. The process itself felt a bit unstructured, and I believe a misunderstanding during the final interview affected the outcome, as my comments about past applications were misinterpreted as a lack of interest in the role.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Apart from discussing my projects and achievements, they asked two brain-teaser questions — one about calculating when the clock’s hour and minute hands align, and another involving similar logic-based timing problems.
