HR was great. I went through a phone interview and one on one then went in to the office.
Everyone was late in the office interview. The initial people I was set to interview with had all been up all night fixing something. So they just dug up random people for me to interview with, who were also late (although understandably since they had about 5 minutes to prepare).
The first two people went well, the third person it did not. The third person didn't even know the job I was applying to and when I told him I was there for another position the whole process seemed to go down hill. This person also seemed to have a preconception about my background since I was prior military.
He was surprised by basic things like ships pulled into ports and seemed to think I was lying when I said I had volunteered to work with the Army as part of the Navy. I was later told by the recruiting team that they don't look on military leadership as leadership. He also talked about things like the 'compliment sandwich' as if it was new groundbreaking stuff.
The last person in the interview was the founder. He was running late for another meeting, and it seemed he is usually there as a formality. We didn't discuss anything really meaningful just the usual 'Why do you want to work here', etc. He spent his time correcting every little thing I said, if I said WP Engine had x amount of growth he had to correct me to the nth degree. I imagine if I had said it was 77 degrees outside he would have said "well it is 77.3 degrees" which was a pretty large put-off.
Afterwards they called and apologized after an employee out at a social event had overheard me talking about the interview to a fiend and fellow vet, they encouraged me to apply again and the position I applied for went right back to the third person in the prior interview. Needless to say it was rejected in the first stage of the process. I won't bother to apply again.
The environment seems hectic and they seem to be in a flux state between start-up and establish company; which is expected for their age and size. Also the interviews are one on one, which allows for greater bias in the process; they should have an HR rep in the interview, or conduct a true panel interview. But I'd say if you are a vet don't waste your time applying here.
