      IT Manager Interview

      Jul 13, 2017

      San Francisco, CA

      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Weebly (San Francisco, CA) in May 2017

      Interview

The job I applied for is still an active listing as of this writing (7/12/17): Two phone screens then a 3- hour (scheduled for 1 3/4 hours) on-site to meet various team members( IT Engineer, IT Desktop Support Engineer, and CTO-Founder). Six days later I received an invitation to 'work for them for 3 days'. The request included hourly compensation at a rate, when extrapolated, was significantly below my current salary. There had been no discussion of salary or benefits, so I thought it prudent to flesh this out first. I also hadn't been given much info at all about their 'work for us first' screening process, all I was told was that it would be 3 days. I received the invitation the week before the Memorial Day weekend, meaning the following week was only 4 days long. I responded on May 23 asking two questions: 1- Were these 3 contiguous days, or just 3 days in a single week? A that point I was the only person in IT at my current company aside from outsourced help at 10 hours a week. It's great they want to screen you for 3 days, but I have responsibilities with my current employer, regardless of how much I want to move on. 2 - "We haven't discussed salary ranges, so I'm thinking it might be prudent to do a mutual check on this.... " A day later I receive a note saying, "I have an update for you. Unfortunately, we are going to move forward with another candidate at this time. We have been interviewing a candidate who is able to come in for the extended onsite next week ... The team really enjoyed meeting with you and would've like to continue had the timing been different. We will keep your info on file in case we have another opportunity down the line that works out better. We wish you the best of luck!" Honestly, I feel really bad for the IT team; during the interview I learned how swamped and overwhelmed they felt by the tech debt and lack of resources necessary just to keep up. They really needed leadership and more hands-on. It's clear there's a breakdown in their hiring process, they're foregoing qualified candidates because the candidate cannot just drop ongoing responsibilities. Weebly desperately needs more resources in IT, yet the position is still open, and there are many, many good IT managers out there. One would think a good work ethic, especially towards a current employer you're unhappy with, would be a good signal? A smart process would respond, "Another candidate has accepted the 3-day on-site tryout; we need to put a hold on our process until the other candidate completes their on-site. We will be in touch." Or, it wasn't the delay in scheduling the 3-day work process, but the asking questions to ensure both parties move forward with eyes wide open.
