I had several interviews, all of which were great. The hiring manager was kind, and informative on the role and expectations. I met with her superior who was nice as well, although she did make a comment about my appearance and said "we'll have you meet with the client as well as it's up to them to make the final decision. They may or may not like your - ." While I understand she was trying to give an example and there was likely no malicious intent behind it, it did make me feel uncomfortable. Physical appearance should never be mentioned in an interview, even if it seems harmless. I continued to have 2 more interviews with the team and client, all of whom were very excited and eager for us to “get started”. In the last conversation with the hiring manager, she said she would have an offer to me “if not by the end of day then tomorrow, as she needed to finalize the comp package and bonus structure.” The next day I received a call they talked to the client and they had decided to pass as I didn't have "specific qualifications." Now I completely understand that things happen, and getting through the entire interview process does not guarantee an offer. But, I think it's incredibly misleading, rude and unprofessional that the hiring manager would verbally say to a candidate to expect an offer in 24 hours, to then essentially rescind that offer. I have been through many different interview processes, and I've never been told I was going to receive an offer only to be told less than 24 hours later that they are going in a different direction due to specific qualifications. My resume didn’t change in those 24 hours so I don’t believe that was the truthful reason. I recommend that you keep it noncommittal throughout the entire process and do not verbally commit to a candidate so that candidate is not completely mislead.
