      Research Scientist Interview

      Aug 29, 2011
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Durham, NC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Wolfspeed (Durham, NC) in Aug 2010

      Interview

I had a very long series of phone interviews, I believe a total of 5 phone interviews over the course of a few weeks, one with an HR person and 4 with various engineers and scientists , including managers.. Last year when I had these interviews I was a Postdoc at a world famous scientific research laboratory (Los Alamos National Laboratory), they proceeded to insult me by saying that people at said national laboratory are lazy and don't do any real work. Persistently asked if I was comfortable working 65-80 hours a week.. One of the scientists performing the interview claimed he works 80 hours a week and said that is the expectation. I don't believe anyone does productive technical work for 80 hours a week. These people are extremely arrogant and insulting. I did not give a convincing yes answer to the question "are you comfortable working 80 hours a week consistently" in the final phone interview and got a rejection email the next morning.. Lots of fairly detailed technical "quiz questions" regarding what I had done in my PhD research and since then and various physics and electronics quiz questions.. These technical questions were much more detailed and difficult than those I had encountered in other interviews . I think I did OK with those, the problem was they were not convinced about my eagerness to work 11 hours a day 7 days a week, which seemed to be the expectation.. The people are so arrogant and insulting they seem to be full of insecurities.. A very strange interview process indeed.. I had so many phone interviews and they were so insulting and unpleasant I was rather annoyed with them for wasting my time when I got the rejection email, although not surprised..

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Wolfspeed in Aug 2019

      Interview

Applied online through the Cree website. Heard back from the hiring manager within a couple weeks. Had a phone screening with the hiring manager and then a skype interview with his team 2 weeks after that to present my doctoral research. Both interviews were strange, the phone screen especially. He would beat around the bush of what he wanted to know, and phrased the questions in such an odd manner. He also asked me a question set up as, "would option A or option B would be a better way to do this thing?" Well, it was neither and he was trying to trip me up. He tried this more than once, and I find that to be rude. Reading through some of these interview reviews, I was really dreading the worst. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as I feared, and the hiring manager wasn't as rude as some of the reviews indicated. However, I still had a negative experience and I'm honestly glad I didn't get an offer. There wasn't a good fit on either side apparently. As a note, one of my friends also interviewed with them and did get an offer. He declined because they couldn't agree on salary. What they offered wasn't going to be worth working 50-60 hours a week for a manager with a big ego.

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Wolfspeed (Durham, NC) in Jul 2018

      Interview

Interview process consisted of phone screen, followed by full day presentation/interview/lunch. Afterwards was invited to dinner with several of the interviewers. I found that the Cree interview process was very enjoyable. The interviewers were warm and friendly, and interviews felt much like research discussions one would have with colleagues. Obviously, some questions were still challenging and were designed to try and test knowledge/thought process. Presentation was around 30 minutes max while individual interviews varied from 30-45 minutes each.
