Program managers are responsible for overseeing several company projects that are connected by a common goal. Employers are looking for candidates who excel at people management and conflict resolution. Interviewers will want to know about your leadership and multitasking skills, so come ready to discuss a time you were able to successfully motivate a group to meet an imminent deadline or any experience diffusing issues between coworkers.
Q: A time when you solved a complicated problem with a simple solution? Q: A time when you made a bad decision and how did you rectify it? Q: A time where you innovated and simplified a process? Q: A time when you were faced in a difficult client face conflict?
All of them are based on the leadership principles so just prep based on the plethora of resources available online.
Not all the questions mapped across obviously to the leadership principles, as they should have. For example, tell me about a time you ran a project which failed?
Interviewer questions were like "tell me about a time you 'wowed' your last boss". There were zero questions pertaining directly to the job, or my experience as it would apply to the position. It seemed like fluff, with no solid practical questions.
The STAR system questions. They seem to go by their book.
Recruiter sent a set of questions to answer and send them a copy. Questions were focusing in your failures, achievements, Amazon leadership and how it maps to your experience, as well as explain the most difficult project you got involved. I needed to prepare that before they arrange/offer a phone interview. Prior to my interview, I expressed the recruiter that I do not write code and I do not want questions to be asked in coding or SW design. I did not have any problems with SW project management, requirements and etc. My main background was HW. In my phone interview, there was not any single question about Amazon leadership or any questions about my resume. Only question was about API design and detail system SW design. I thought this is program management position and I felt uncomfortable with SW API design questions.
