Interviewers will be looking for candidates who are skilled in communicating, multitasking, and maintaining a friendly attitude under pressure. What's the first thing you should if a guest has a complaint?
Do you like food?
Nothing difficult was asked but on a funny note. I was asked my favorite beer and style. To which i responded Palate Wrecker, bitter, hoppy IPA; a mouthfeel on the lighter side is a bonus and skunky like greenflash wins me over. The MANAGER then proceeds to comment ooo you must like the "whatever mediocre pils that they had on draft at the time. I smiled and said not really. I don't know if that was suppose to be some kind of test, but it wasn't a good one. You either have to suggest that the manager's recommendation made no sense or pretend to like the suggested and create dissonance between your answers....
My overall Opinion on the experience
How would you help a customer if they asked you....
How would you sell me this glass of water?
The most difficult question for me is naming a specific difficult situation that I overcame.
The interview is divided into 2 sections: general hospitality questions & catering skills questions. Questions as broad as "define hospitality" & others with a specific answer "what side do you serve from?"
Nothing difficult. You really have to be thick skinned to be a server. You will have guests that criticize you for all aspects of the restaurant. You can't take it personally.
