Pros

The one reason I decided to work at AIG were the endless opportunities. I keep my eyes open and ears perked for projects that I could get involved in or I come up with new ideas that create buzz. I work on a great team that values diversity and agility in opinion and creativity. Each day is an adventure .... in a good way. I would recommend AIG as an employer to consider.

Cons

As in any large corporation, 'process' always gets in the way. Process has slowed my role down more often than not. Patience and collaboration is necessary for this to work well.

Pros

Nothing beats working for a global household name. Potential to learn, international perspective, respect in the industry (mostly until the crisis ). Entrepreneurial environment but don't look for management support. Once you show you are capable, they tend to back off but no team work can be expected. Stayed a long time and ultimately made good progress but toughest environment I've seen and I've worked at a number of high profile tough places.

Cons

Never worked at a place were management places so little value on their employees. Cronyism prevails, as does sexism. Poor governance continues to be an issue, even after bailout and repayment if loans. Only act when they are absolutely forced too. I.e. Icahn currently trying to impose better mgmt. Be prepared to do battle at every turn and deal with people who guard their territory. Surprising the Board puts up with executive mgmt. Never admit to mistakes.

Pros

- Great PTO and work-life balance. I was able to work from home as much as I needed/wanted - Great co-workers who are generally friendly and helpful - Hose-hold name in the insurance business and a great resume booster

Cons

- Lousy salary that's hilariously below market rate for entry-level employees (with low % caps on raises) - Does not promote from within - Heavy middle management layer is wasteful and creates a culture of managers managing managers (who then just manage consultants) - All the great benefits (including AIG's once-great Tuition Reimbursement Program) have been reduced to almost nothing
