lack of innovation, excessive micro management

Pros

It's an "engineering" job, in buffalo, which can be hard to find. Some of the engineering managers work hard and try to take into account the opinions of employees. They do offer tuition reimbursement, although see below for cons regarding that. It looks decent on a resume and the work is sometimes interesting.

Cons

Excessive micro-management. Both in terms of time spent at work and problem solving process, which discourages innovation. They will provide tuition reimbursement but will not allow you to take classes during core hours, which severely limits what you are able to take. Work life balance is not very good, raises are pretty bad - 2% for a good performance review - and some engineering managers are very far removed from anything technical, which makes it difficult to talk to relate to them and make them understand the time and resources required for a certain task. Big company atmosphere in a small company - for example, if there is 6 feet of snow on the ground but not a driving ban in amherst, they will force you to take a personal day if you do not come to work. But, that's company policy. The turnover rate of employees is very high - probably 1/3 of the company per year. I did not enjoy my time at atto.

Not a place to make a career (unless you're a developer)

Pros

Nice intelligent people work here. Executive team seems well intended. Most roles are low on the effort scale, however the pay and opportunities are proportional.

Cons

Pay is below industry average and not enticing to talent. High turnover rate in departments outside of engineering ie marketing, sales, and operations. Zero career advancement opportunities outside of meaningless title changes and 2% annual raises. Office culture is outdated, see movie Office Space. If you want a low effort, below average paycheck job that you can punch in/out of 8am-5pm and sit in a cubical at a computer everyday, this is the place for you.

Pros

My manager is very hands on and has shown me the ropes in regards to the various programming languages and and operating systems. If you can program in C and use Linux and Windows Operating systems, this is a great position to seg-way into any programming or software/hardware engineering position.

Cons

Although the pay is not the best the benefits and culture is stellar! I have a couple friend who left ATTO for companies like Yahoo, etc. and they are bored to death swapping out disk drives all day long and attempting to come back to ATTO. I am sure ATTO will give them the chance to come back due to their "family-like" culture they've created.
