Pros

Video compression is an interesting and challenging topic. You got to work with the biggest customer names in the industry. It's an opportunity to work with some of the smartest engineers in town (and beyond). The workspace is nice with many collaborative spaces.

Cons

Now that all Elemental cofounders and many former execs and old timers are gone, this company has become just one cog in the big Amazon machine. Senior management lacks experience and is ostentatious against engineers who have been with Elemental for many years. Guess what? Elemental was acquired because of the expertise in video we could bring to AWS. The new management team tends to forget it. Work-life balance is non-existent. You will get paged at any time, including nights and weekends. You'll constantly be asked for more by your manager. And don't imagine that it is a stepping stone to a promotion: the chances are very thin, especially when you are based in Portland. Seattle is where everything happens now. As several others mentioned, many perks have gone away. Friday lunches are still a thing, but for how long? Motivation is following the same path - you can tell when you talk to people in the office. Sad times.

Pros

Great people, great location, great technology. Amazing culture that encourages community involvement and diversity. Awesome perks like snacks, soda, public transit, training, and beta testing opportunities. One of the best perks is the Culture Karma Club that encourages you get to know your colleagues better over food, drinks, or other fun activities.

Cons

Still a little disorganized at times, especially when it comes to operational documentation. The acquisition has led to the adoption of many AWS tools that weren't ready for primetime and the migrations aren't always well thought out. Many of the perks are slowly being stripped away.

Great place to work and to have fun

Pros

I give high praise to my former coworkers and managers there. The original Elemental Technologies startup developed excellent products and services, found a good match in being acquired by AWS, and continuously improves its offerings as well as the way those offerings are developed and tested. Good benefits, free snacks, great downtown Portland location, and other nice perks, including a wonderful Friday Lunch guest speaker series. But the people I worked with there are the single best perk. Smart, friendly, and willing to do what’s best for the customer.

Cons

Hard to think of any negatives. The previous location at SW Broadway and Oak might have been a more fun area to work in, closer to the Pearl Dustrict and the food carts. But the new building at SW Broadway and Jefferson (the old Oregonian building) is much less cramped and closer to PSU, so it was a wash for me.
