Pros

Some of the people there are nice, and I still talk to to this day. Benefits such as health, dental, visions were good as well as tuition for employees being covered in full and a huge benefit.

Cons

This position specifically has a lot of moving parts, I haven't seen many universities where students accounts is maintained by one person making between $24-29 an hour and your responsible for weekly student refunds, monthly student billings, monthly collections, daily student postings to the SIS system and then having to turn around and post to a separate accounting system because the two don't integrate with each other. Daily phone calls/emails from the student body. Not to mention you are also responsible for year end 1098t review, distribution, and IRS upload. Honestly this is just touching the surface of your responsibilities.

Paternalistic Culture

Pros

The emphasis on Alaskan Native community events i.e. Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration, AFN Basketball championship, NYO.

Cons

Very strong paternalistic culture that doesn't actually listen to employee needs. They prioritize unnecessary in office attendance even on days the school district and UAA close for weather and commuting in would be dangerous. You are expected to use PTO for inclement weather days and they don't give sick leave. They aren't adaptive or dynamic and a lot of policies and procedures are outdated.

Pros

Flexible work schedule, lots of time off, beautiful setting/location, great colleagues

Cons

Limited administrative support (due to small size/practically nonexistent infrastructure), high turnover among staff, low salaries relative to comparable positions, disconnect between administration and faculty
