Pros

As far as corporate offices go, it's a good balance of working hard and playing hard. People are generally cordial and down-to-earth, although due to the merger with EDT, expansion is causing the social atmosphere to stiffen.

Cons

It is located off of Rt 95 smack in between 90 (the Mass Pike) and Route 2 - it's the intersection of some of the worst traffic in Massachusetts. There is no room to grow as an employee...in my 7 years there, none of my contemporaries developed into a larger role. You cannot become a manager or director here unless you already are one from prior experience.

Pros

Alkermes tries (and successfully) does a lot with a small R&D team. Each person is a highly-valued member of their team and contributes significantly to each project and has a direct impact to that project's development. New ideas are usually welcomed if they are scientifically supported. The workforce is relatively young and makes for a more fun office environment. There are a good amount of managers that care about their direct reports' career development and overall work/life balance. Company does a good job of trying to celebrate achievements with employees and upper management seems to value and be open to questions and comments from the lower-level employees.

Cons

Because Alkermes supports so many projects with such a small R&D force, the workload can be at times, quite heavy, with more than several instances where vacation time has been suspended in order to meet project deadlines months before. Career development can be stymied or ground to a halt depending on the manager you have. Some are fantastic, others can be less than desirable.

Pros

Alkermes R&D has an exceptional team of talented scientists, lead by a senior management team that is very strong scientifically. Salary and benefits are excellent.

Cons

Alkermes has a top-down command-and-control culture, with too much micromanagement and not enough empowerment/trust. Individuals who question the status quo or do not instantly align themselves 100% with the prevailing senior management position are quickly marginalized (or worse), even when they have valid reasons for taking an alternative view and have the best interests of the company at heart. Such individuals have no hope of rehabilitation. For middle management roles in R&D, political adeptness is far more important for career success than scientific/technical/managerial ability.
