Was Open Science

Pros

The initial concept of providing Open Science for free was extremely appealing. Coworkers are generally quite good

Cons

The institute has transitioned from freely sharing our scientific data with the world to outsourcing it to a third party. Now, both our global customers and our own science staff must pay this external company to access what was once ‘open’ science. Additionally, it appears we are straying from our values, as there seems to be a lack of emphasis on being prudent with our resources. Furthermore, it seems there has been quite a shift from team science, to being full of office politics.

Pros

Great mission Access to great technology and resources Some bright and helpful colleagues

Cons

Favoritism/Office politics lead to inappropriate promotions and differential treatment Leadership can be very dismissive and indecisive on projects DEI work not credited seriously, especially if on a science track Promotion process is painfully opaque Job family tree guidelines are vague so they can be weaponized against you or used for inappropriate rewarding depending on manager's interest in your career RA track is very limiting, you can do so much but yet be tied down to unfair standards especially if your manager is unsupportive. There is no serious consideration given to how to keep RA's at the institute and transition them to Scientist tracks without PhD Each Institute has different culture, which makes it difficult to advocate for policy change

Getting to do cool stuff is definitely part of the joy of working at the Allen Institute. I'd find it really helpful to learn more about your headline statement "Management is bad". Please feel free to send me more information at: judy.burke@alleninstitute.org
