Pros

-Work-life balance is great, largely due to low productivity expectations. - Health insurance and 401K benefits are amazing if you can afford contributions. - A select few projects are groundbreaking scientifically and fulfilling to work on.

Cons

- could sink your career as your success almost solely depends on how much your manager schmoozes the CSO. -low pay for highly specialized positions compared to industry. - lots of ineffective, unproductive investigators and managers that can’t be swept out due to politics. - tons of focus on meaningless internal milestones (“smart goals”) instead of scientific milestones. -low morale above the RA level
