Pros

Working an Explosive Detection Canine. Learning a new way to handle a canine from what I was previously used to . Compensation is good as a handler. The deployed guys make above average and the stateside guys make a fair wage for the work.

Cons

The monthly stipend- the type of canine the company deploys requires daily training. That said, I had to travel to different locations to get in the amount of training required to remain proficient. The very small monthly stipend didn't come close to covering my expenses or time. But honestly if I got into Canine to get rich I would need to find a different job I suppose. Communication was not very good between handlers and management. Scheduling was very- very lax. By the time you get scheduled to do something it was virtually the very next day they needed it which is difficult at times. If you ever leave MSA, you're screwed. This is the oddest thing actually- regardless of the reason(s)- it is very difficult to get back on with the company for those of us who didn't leave on bad terms or who would want to. Lastly, the one things that really bothered me, is they hold the dog over the handlers head. It is treated like a piece of equipment rather than what it is- a bonded living breathing animal and it just back in rotation like all the others and that is sad.

Pros

They'll let you borrow a dog that poops on command.

Cons

MSA is being sued from coast to coast for unpaid wages by hundreds of current and former dog handlers. That should be a big indicator about this company. Management acts like they're auditioning for Goodfellas 2 . They've lost so many handlers in the last year that they have to threaten to take dogs away if employees won't work crazy amounts of overtime. These threats are not baseless. Retired Cops and Veterans have lost their jobs at MSA because they were unable to work because of: 1. They were on company approved vacation and wouldn't cut it short to work. 2. They had custody of their kids on weekends and couldn't work without MSA giving them advance notice. 3. MSA called an hour before a shift started and expected you to "step up", drop everything, and go to work. Scheduleing is a disaster. Pay discrepancies left and right but it's always someone else's job to fix them. Scheduleing will forget to schedule someone at a post and then when the client calls to complain they'll lie and say you were in a car accident or stuck in traffic. Then they'll call you and tell you to go along with the lie or you could lose your post. Upper management is aware of this scheme and have done nothing to reprimand those responsible. You'll fall in love with your dog and the company knows that. They have no issue reminding you that it's their property and they can take it at anytime for any reason.
