I’m writing this review so future candidates—especially minorities and women …can make an informed decision before joining Altruist. Altruist markets itself as a modern, mission-driven fintech but my experience reflected something very different. The culture consistently rewarded proximity over performance and the loudest voices in the room often overshadowed the most competent. Microaggressions were ignored, accountability was selective and leadership often acted unaware of how their decisions impacted the people doing the real work. I often found myself navigating an environment where mediocrity was praised and constructive feedback was misinterpreted as a threat. Elevation opportunities felt more closely tied to favoritism than to merit or impact. There were two layoffs in one year, constant strategic pivots and a recurring pattern of over-promising to investors while employees bore the weight of underdeveloped processes. The stress this created was REAL and unnecessary. Positive reviews you see online often come from HR or leadership, not the average employee. I don’t know a single person in the trenches who would genuinely rate the experience 5 stars.
