Pros
- The main pro is the people, specifically peers and other Individual Contributors I interact with. On top of being talented and hard-working, everyone is very generous with their time. Always happy to meet to answer questions, help you with a problem, etc. - Compensation, while not as high as other big tech firms, is certainly plenty to get by with. Don’t expect to be able to negotiate raises though - you will be shot down and shamed for being ungrateful.
Cons
- Horrible management, though I hope this isn’t a company-wide experience. Unfortunately, if you are stuck with a boss who doesn’t care about managing people and helping them meet their career goals, you are screwed. Given current economic circumstances, internal transfers are incredibly limited and incredibly competitive. - RTO is not going anywhere, and it is managed very top-down, so low to mid level management can’t do much to get you an exception. Exceptions aren’t even allowed for L4s, you have to be L5 plus to submit a request to go virtual. The decision is then performance based. - Limited PTO that doesn’t really increase much with tenure. - Data science in my org is actually just data analysis. No opportunities for machine learning or statistical analysis projects.
