Pros

It's a high growth company where you collaborate with brilliant people and help customers solve interesting problems. Intellectually stimulating and could be great.

Cons

AWS has the same culture as the rest of Amazon, a ruthless focus on output at all costs with no consideration for the people they churn through. My manager's boss increased expectations for my team during the pandemic when many colleagues were suffering.

Pros

Working at one of the leading companies in AI, and providing over 1/3 of the world’s internet. Healthcare benefits are great!

Cons

Vague and cut throat. There is a culling each year of at least 5% of employees in each org. They lay off high performing people to meet goals. Doesn’t matter how good they are at their job. I’ve seen so many excellent people targeted and PIP’ed for literally no reason and their mgrs tear them down and drive them out to meet attrition goals. Mgmt hides this process from the ICs but rest assured it is practiced. Leadership is highly political and narcissistic, The higher one moves up, the more sociopathic they are. CULTURE OF FEAR. Get your high salary and leave by year 4 after all your RSUs vest. Most don’t stay that long. 90% of teams are ruthless, 10% are ok to be in. Don’t expect to work less than 50 hours a week, usually it’s a lot more at top speed and you will always be assigned far too much work. Work life balance is horrid. Expect to take leave of absences for mental health. You will have anxiety, depression and PTSD. Do not trust HR. Don’t ever think you are safe in your job. They’ll cut you in a heartbeat.

Pros

You get to work with some very talented professionals, there is always something new to learn and the benefits package was attractive.

Cons

They work you to the bone. Overtime creeps up and suddenly it is part of the norm. Doing 16+ hour days were common. Work load was imbalanced compared to other team mates on other teams. The biggest downfall is the constant churn. That is through their stupid pay structure where you make less each year but supposedly gain additional stock. The first 4 years are laid out when you receive an offer and most leave at the steep drop-off at the end of year 2. On top of this we saw a lot of favoritism. The lowest 12% could be eliminated in a Performance Improvement Plan. I saw others go through this process and no matter how good their review or contributions, it became a game of favorites. You could be "voted off the island" and they were offered money to leave or if they failed a smaller severance. Also the return too office mandate and the layoffs have killed the diversity that was beginning to grow from remote workers with a lot to offer, Many of those DEI employees were cut.
