Pros

It will look good on my resume because the rest of the world seem to think this is such a great company to work for ... and everyone who works there is supposed to be the best on its game.

Cons

Blue Box Values is just a way to brain wash employees and keep them under control. Work and life balance is a joke if you work in one of their call centers. I just heard from a coworker from the call center in South Florida where they are being forced to work both Saturday and Sunday. We go on business trips and find out how unhappy everyone is although they look so satisfied and proud to work for AMEX on the surface; common complaints are favoritism, little opportunity for career advancement, you are given so much time off but you have to fight for it anytime you want to take it. Big brother is always watching everything you say and do. The computer systems are from the stone age. Travel Specialists are required to do sale, service, accounting and clerk jobs and always be on compliance. There are as many departments as there are 1800 numbers are AMEX. There are no standards set for anything - each agent tells their customer whatever they want - no common business practices even from two individuals working side by side not to mention different offices. Platinum Card Holders will have their calls and requests answered before Centurion agents pick up a call. Centurion agents are sold on idea they are so special because their clients are supposed to be celebrities, etc ... they end up doing less work, getting more pay and recognition. Benefits used to be great and they are getting cut out as well. Management expects us to increase sales, we will close clients but since we have no access to their "card information" they are not able to charge it to their American Express Card as their limit has just been cut in half ! They of course feel cheated as we are selling them on something at the same time we are telling them they can not afford it. This has been happening more and more often lately ...

Pros

Varied and global opportunities for development, global outlook. The opportunity to meet diverse and interesting people in a variety of locations.

Cons

Short term thinking, particulary around the PMP process. Organisations, driven by senior leaders, are entirely focussed on deliverables in the current year, the bigger, long term picture is almost always forgotten. Kneejerk and inaffective cost cutting measures are implemented only to hit quarterly targets, whatever the claims of the companies leaders, this is a short term focussed organisation. A large number of employees appear 'brainwashed' and accept the regular spin from senior leaders. Senior leaders also do not 'practice what they preach'
