Pros

For NHQ and most chapters: The benefits package is quite good (even a pension plan, though I believe it's been somewhat reduced), sense of fulfillment in your work.

Cons

Wasteful spending, fighting between chapters and NHQ, fighting within NHQ, initiatives that get launched with great fanfare only to decline soon after with not much ROI. They need to stick with and support one CEO for at least a 5-year term to carry through what gets started. Not only that, but each new CEO flushes out the old deputies and brings in the new. Every year or so for the past 7 years, we've had no one steady at the CEO and positions directly under the CEO.

Pros

flexibility with outside obligations (i.e. - school, children, MD appointments, caring for aging parents), personal satisfaction in assisting those less fortunate (working in the food pantry or in disaster services, assisting those that have lost most of their personal possessions.), Autonomy in your work, self-directed, self-managed goals.

Cons

very little leadership, poor quality leadership, hardly any support from supervisors, left to flounder when called to defend your work, not defended by your direct manager. Too much autonomy, no direction provided. most jobs are a combination of 2-3 positions - i.e. too much work crammed into not enough time. No auxillary support.

Pros

Largest relief agency in America with $billions of assets. Humanitarian motivation among many volunteers. Political, logistical and financial support from DOD, FEMA, White House, and some major corporations.

Cons

Lack of leadership, management skills, vision, humanitarian focus. Evidence of long-term patterns of malfeasance, discrimination and even corruption. Lack of recourse within organization to employees who protest, wish to resolve problems or seek redress. Deep structural cronyism. Punitive conduct towards those who ask questions or urge reform. Institutional arrogance and inertia. Open exploitation of donors and volunteers with false promises and platitudes. Misallocation of donor monies and volunteer time. Lack of respect for donor and volunteer privacy and confidentiality. Repeated violations of key federal and state regulations. Expensive use of PR to stifle criticism and dodge accountability. Leadership tends to be politically partisan and from right of the political spectrum.
