Pros

Flexible time, good atmosphere to work in, they do value their employees. The salaries and bonuses are very competitive for the industry. I have worked for other bio-techs and I must say that I miss the 6week paid sabbatical at Genentech but overall Amgen has been a better place to work on a daily basis. The company went through lay offs in 2007 and the working climate suffered but the confidence has grown back up. Overall, Amgen is a great place to work and I really feel proud to say that I work for Amgen. It's not a small company feel but you will feel respected.

Cons

As with all big companies there is it's fair share of politics. I have seen some departments have a lot to deal with in thise aspect and in others it's minimal.

Pros

Possibility that resources could be put toward acheiving great scientific and clinical research. Many bright people. Pleasant, but expensive, HQ location.

Cons

Strong "cash cow" culture, scientific purpose lost in corporate nonsense. Management is relying too much on finance and marketing to address issues that are really scientific and one unfortnate consequence is that there aren't that many interesting leadership opportunities for the clinical and reseach scientists and there just doesn't seem to be a critical mass of engaged scientists. The way they've constucted the drug development process is anti-collaborative and seems like something you'd expect for a consumer/retail product rather than a technical/scientific product.

Pros

Location.... Time off work. Big company in a small community. At times it still has that small company excitement. The benifits are not bad for a self insured company. But they have slipped in recent years.

Cons

Lack of Leadership. Its really a old boys club.. There seems to be blinders on the Management at the top. There seems to be a lack of knowledge with management. they seems to be very arrogant yet have no experience in either there field of work or their ability to manage people. Amgen has allot of people who are GREAT individual contributors but severely lack the ability to manage people. Amgen is very much a good old boys club or popularity contest. If your like then you move up of not then oh well. Amgen also has been know for moving managers around, so when it comes time for reviews you may not be reviewed by a person who has seen your performance. You can have 2 or 3 different managers in a year
