Pros

The engineering staff is solid as a whole, good people, enjoyable work days. It obviously varies somewhat by team, but all are pretty strong. They restructured the career paths/titles/job descriptions in mid-2014 and now it feels like there is a growth path. The group I was in aggressively pushed people they identified as having potential into new roles as available. This company also has a very good work-life balance and really wants to help fix education.

Cons

The perks are lacking, as in there had been effectively none. It was just starting to change when I left (mid-2014). Salary is the same, hasn't been up to market, but they're making a slow effort to raise pay. As Amplify is now owned by News Corp, there is a feeling of levels of management above the average engineer reaching into the sky and just not providing any value. There is a very lenient work from home policy that I think hurts team cohesion at times. It was not unusual for me to be the only one in the office for one of my teams. While the engineering is solid, it's about 1/5th of the company in terms of people and sometimes I think the company forgets that this is a technology company and engineering is not always front-and-center.

Pros

Used to be a great place to work. Smart people, important industry, meaningful work.

Cons

It seems to be a classic case of small company gets a large investment and doesn't know what to do next. There is virtually not accountability. Teams can go on for years without completing what should be a simple product, and the response from management seems to be just to give them more money. The result should be fairly predictable. The "Learning" organization is a perfect example of this. Over two years into the project, they still didn't have a completed product or even concrete vision so more and more resources got thrown at them. Rampant cronyism results in incompetent "managers" who throw around terms like "MVP", "agile", or "start-up culture", while clearly having no idea what they mean. And while you might think the lack of accountability would mean people play nice with each other (no need to fear getting fired), its probably one of the more vicious organizations in terms of backstabbing and such I have ever seen. Also if you are not in the NY office, you are very limited in what opportunities are available to you, despite their claims to commitment to the other locations.
