Pros

Non stress environment, decent benefits , decent pay, friendly environment

Cons

Managers and supervisors are not qualified for jobs because of Amtraks hiring from within policys. Basically u can go from cleaning a train to supervising a team of experienced craftspeople like electricians, plumbers and so on in 2 years. Education is not valued , if you are too smart they will push you out the door. Management lacks basic skills as they are all ex cleaners with no education or management experience . It can be a very physical job at times including working in all types of weather. Your shift changes regularly for first few years. This review is based on the NY facilities.

Pros

Interesting work, good pay, health benefits

Cons

Long hours. Really weird and inconsistent policies, unevenly applied. Managers get away with stuff, but front-line employees get fired for things that shouldn't be cause for firing. Employees treated like equipment.

Pros

A lot of exposure to a diverse amount of railroad projects There are a ton of good-hearted and well-experienced people 4 weeks vacation/sick standard Railroad Retirement for all Easy mobility between career paths and departments

Cons

50% of the office staff is dedicated essentially to collecting data or following ridiculous paperwork workflows, which is very frustrating. Nothing works fast If you take a production or field position, you will not be able to have a life outside of work. Management will constantly take away support and resources and ask for the same production. Pay is ok, I wouldn't say it's great. Benefits are just as crappy as everywhere else since OC was mandated. The yearly bonus is kind of a lottery, it based on factors you can't control through a poorly planned system. So if the numbers happen to work out, you get a bonus. Performance bonuses don't exist, other than in a handful of rare special projects. Tuition assistance is laughable, $5k a year. Internal raises are inflation only, even with a promotion it's difficult to get compensated.
