Pros

Great clients. If the client is yours, you get to do everything, personal tax returns, business tax returns, estate and gift, etc. Pay is competitive and hours are reasonable.

Cons

I came in as a Director several years ago. No one was friendly, they went out of their way to be difficult and isolate me. I had inadequate staffing help because the staffing director was antagonistic towards me. Top management actually bought into the same behavior. I can't remember one full day that I felt truly comfortable and I left after being treated like a stranger for too long. Let me be clear - I don't need people to be my best friend, but if I say Good Morning, I expect a return greeting. Particularly upsetting was that my mother died when I worked there. From the two Managing Directors I reported to, I received an email and a voice mail. Some people said nothing to me, two weeks later were tearing me down. This was not just my experience. Other newcomers were treated the same. I can quote a colleague, "The NY office does not function like a firm, it's partners that share office space." A friend of a friend recently worked there as a Manager and hated it. I think he stuck it out two years.

Pros

The people in my office were mostly nice, but some were only tolerable at best. People are worse in other offices by far. No other pros from my perspective.

Cons

Technology--complete joke. Systems are ancient by today's standards. Little to no innovation from a technological perspective. Little to no investment in technological innovation from what I gathered during my time there. Laptops are garbage and the systems are just as bad. IT management--see previous comments regarding technology. Lack of education is obvious. Incompetent would be putting it nicely. Expectations do not align with compensation package--one of the only companies in a large, metropolitan market that does not cover simple things such as parking or transit fares the way other companies in the same markets do (unless you're an "executive"--those who can afford it most pay the least). Little to no true feedback--self-reviews are a lazy way for managers to do little to no work in actually evaluating work performance. Career trajectory is entirely subjective--favoritism, cronyism, nepotism are the top three ways that, from my perspective, one was able to get promoted despite the fact that there were other, more qualified people that could do the job better. HR. I don't even need to say anything else here--others have pointed out the flaws with this group and it's all true.
