Pros
1. Top tier people and culture: This was the biggest draw initially and continues to be the most compelling reason to grow here. Folks care about what they do and invest in their people/jobs. It's also easy to build relationships with coworkers and feel like you're part of a cohesive team working towards a larger mission.
2. Living out our values: What's stood out to me is the continual, legitimate reference back to our core values. It's not fluff and that itself is telling of the AppFolio culture. The company cares about its people, top to bottom, and aiming to move fast while keeping things simple resonates in each business decision. Delivering value to customers undergirds those decisions so you know there's a positive impact on others with what you do each day.
3. Performance is rewarded: Top talent has incredible opportunities for growth within AppFolio. I've personally been the benefactor of that, receiving several promotions and sizable pay increases over the past few years. It's not a complex system at AppFolio: Excel in your role, get recognized/rewarded for it. The best part is it's not a political game. I love that about the company. There's no need to "play the game" to get ahead.
4. Transparency: Whether it's about a specific customer situation or the company's strategic plan, this is an environment where it's not only safe, but encouraged to ask, "Why?" Leadership actively seeks employee feedback in making business decisions and when those decisions are made, they clearly communicate the why behind it. This gives me incredible confidence in our longer term growth and vision.
5. Flexibility: AppFolio keeps an active ear to the ground and adjusts quickly to changing conditions, as seen since the onset of the pandemic. Top leadership has empowered mid level management to make decisions and handle personnel situations as best suits their specific teams, which is incredibly helpful. Within our now hybrid model, folks have flexibility to do what works for them. Personally, I've been supported by my manager in working remote for longer periods (1-2 weeks) while visiting my fiancee and planning my wedding. I feel we have great balance between time in office around colleagues and remote work.
Cons
I candidly don't have any serious cons. The only item I'd mention is starting salaries in my particular type of work are on the lower side, but this is balanced by the ability to grow quickly with performance and the overall benefits package. It was exciting to see the increased 401k match and additional parental leave benefits that
I consider AppFolio to be a terrific employer who looks out for its people.
