Flexible hours and hostile managers

Pros

My team recently unionized and the other employees in my role are the brilliant (many hold advanced degrees). The hours are flexible.

Cons

My position was framed as a technical writing and bot training position when I interviewed, but unfortunately since the company that created the product was acquired by AppFolio, they've brought in new managers who don't have experience with the product and see us as overpaid call center workers. In addition, there are very limited hours available due to over-hiring, but our managers still require us to meet minimum hours, which can be beyond stressful. There's very little room for advancement (wages have remained fixed for the last 3+ years). Morale on my team is very low.

Thank you for leaving a review – my team reads each and every one because we know feedback is essential to keeping AppFolio a great place to work. AppFolio’s AI operator population is a talented and diverse team, many of whom deeply appreciate the flexibility their positions afford them. It is true that as our AI products have matured, so too have our staffing requirements. But creating an environment that brings out the best in all of our people is and will remain our highest priority.

Amazing leadership & talented teams

Pros

- leadership at every level is professionally mature, organized, and deeply values and supports their teams. - the majority of leaders at AppFolio practice servant leadership, and are committed to developing their team and removing roadblocks - great transparency around how performance is measured, compensation and market ranges, and a refreshing focus on career pathing

Cons

- pay is less competitive than at the start up or fortune 500 company level, AppFolio is a medium sized company that has had explosive growth, and even with market adjustments, with many employees based in California, the pay feels a little behind -as the company has grown rapidly, there are some growing pains around cross-functional collaboration and silos. Definitely normal at this stage, and better than many other companies of similar size/maturity, but can still create challenges for employees.

Phenomenal Place to Work

Pros

1. Top tier people and culture: This was the biggest draw initially and continues to be the most compelling reason to grow here. Folks care about what they do and invest in their people/jobs. It's also easy to build relationships with coworkers and feel like you're part of a cohesive team working towards a larger mission. 2. Living out our values: What's stood out to me is the continual, legitimate reference back to our core values. It's not fluff and that itself is telling of the AppFolio culture. The company cares about its people, top to bottom, and aiming to move fast while keeping things simple resonates in each business decision. Delivering value to customers undergirds those decisions so you know there's a positive impact on others with what you do each day. 3. Performance is rewarded: Top talent has incredible opportunities for growth within AppFolio. I've personally been the benefactor of that, receiving several promotions and sizable pay increases over the past few years. It's not a complex system at AppFolio: Excel in your role, get recognized/rewarded for it. The best part is it's not a political game. I love that about the company. There's no need to "play the game" to get ahead. 4. Transparency: Whether it's about a specific customer situation or the company's strategic plan, this is an environment where it's not only safe, but encouraged to ask, "Why?" Leadership actively seeks employee feedback in making business decisions and when those decisions are made, they clearly communicate the why behind it. This gives me incredible confidence in our longer term growth and vision. 5. Flexibility: AppFolio keeps an active ear to the ground and adjusts quickly to changing conditions, as seen since the onset of the pandemic. Top leadership has empowered mid level management to make decisions and handle personnel situations as best suits their specific teams, which is incredibly helpful. Within our now hybrid model, folks have flexibility to do what works for them. Personally, I've been supported by my manager in working remote for longer periods (1-2 weeks) while visiting my fiancee and planning my wedding. I feel we have great balance between time in office around colleagues and remote work.

Cons

I candidly don't have any serious cons. The only item I'd mention is starting salaries in my particular type of work are on the lower side, but this is balanced by the ability to grow quickly with performance and the overall benefits package. It was exciting to see the increased 401k match and additional parental leave benefits that I consider AppFolio to be a terrific employer who looks out for its people.
