Pros

None.... free coffee.. that's about it.

Cons

People working at the Engineering department in average were at Appian for 10+ years. This includes few upper managements fresh out of college or as their first job. Because of that they have few young managers. I think they are mostly closed minded and stubborn when dealing with diversity of experiences. Because they have worked on the same product/modules for so long and know their product so well, when new employee comes in and if they see the struggles, they don't seem to accept that or understand. Once I got a question...."why do you take this long to ramp up??" They don't seem to realize that they were looking at the same damn thing for 10+ years. Also, it feels like these "experts" seems does not know how to explain things to the new employees. Yes they have "On boarding" process, and 3 weeks of training on the "product"(not the code), but trying to fix a code that is 10+ years old is a different story. People needs to ask bunch of question in the beginning, but they don't accept that because they have been working with same people and same experts for so long they don't understand why he/she is asking question. They expect all of the employees to be prompt with their tempo feeds and emails as well. It is natural to them that they should work during the night, and weekends in frequent basis, because Appian "product" is their baby. They used the gitHub repositories comments when doing performance evaluation. During the daily code reviews, if you write a question that is too obvious to the seniors, upper management will use your comment and say "lack of understanding".

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on your experiences at Appian. We wish you luck in your future endeavors. For context, this person self-identified as Professional Services but only writes about working in Engineering. Unlike many tech companies, Appian encourages transfers -- it's a great opportunity for the right person. Keep in mind, these kinds of transfers are entirely voluntary! We provide support to make these transfers work, including a new Engineering Boot Camp beyond the initial three-week Academy, but ultimately it's up to the individual to supply the passion and dedication required to make the leap.

Frustrating decline

Pros

Good colleagues, who were smart and wanted to make an impact.

Cons

Leadership, who doesn’t allow that impact to be made and dictates what can and can’t be done. My mental health plummeted as an employee as I was asked to do the work of many people while leadership didn’t care about seeing the results of my work. Any discussion about personal growth or development was put off and ignored. Excuses were made for leadership on the decisions that they were making. Diversity and inclusion isn’t a topic of discussion and when brought up as a problem, it is said that it’s priority but continues to be ignored.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We’re glad to hear that you had a wonderful experience with your colleagues, and we agree that Appian is filled with some of the smartest, most capable, and results driven individuals. This is true across Appian and specifically within our Talent Acquisition team. We understand the importance of mental health and wellbeing and have access to our Employee Assistance program that offers access to confidential counseling (in addition to other options). Appian prides itself in cultivating an environment to support the growth of our employees. The Talent Acquisition team often does this with on the job stretch opportunities and projects. On the job learning and stretch opportunities have been found to be the most effective way to grow in one’s career. We also offer opportunities for conference attendance and 1:1 coaching. Diversity and Inclusion is also a topic that remains a priority at Appian and specifically within the Talent Acquisition team. We drive the importance with brown bag discussions as well as actionable sourcing strategies that the team has been asked to deliver on. We appreciate your feedback and wish you the best of luck in your future.

Pros

Most of the people you will work with are passionate, dedicated, and want to do great things. Benefits and compensation are pretty good.

Cons

In the last year to year and a half there have been some questionable senior leadership hires that don't fit into the culture that Appian has always talked about having. Executives continue an unnecessary push for more days back in offices and generally many employees are dejected and morale is much lower than it was in 2022. The focus on the people at the company is dissipating quickly, evidenced by the new evaluation process which was rushed and botched from the get-go. They also started tracking everyone's IP addresses and badge scans to send managers reports about their employee's rate of office attendance, but failed to be transparent and let everyone know they'd be doing that. A big departure from the way this company was some years ago. Very unfortunate.
