Pros

Some people working there are fun

Cons

Benefits were cut (company cruise, Friday perks). Salaries well below the average for industry and the area. Paralysis by analysis on tech side. And side projects/indie time never happened

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Appian and wish you well in the future. To clarify, however, benefits have not been cut, they are increasing all the time. We recently added tuition reimbursement as just one example. There never was a company cruise in your time with us -- the last one (for employees only) was 2006 and we replaced it with an annual retreat where the whole family is paid for. Indie time has always been optional and I'm sorry you found yourself unable to take advantage of this important part of the Appian experience in your short time with us. We've added group competitions to the traditional indie time and found great success so far. Thanks again for taking the time to share your opinions and for your contributions to Appian. -Michael, Co-founder & CTO, Appian

Pros

It is a small company, full of bright people. Everyone in the company is very open and willing to work together whenever is necessary to help out another member of the team. Middle managers are generally good. Most of them care about the people in their teams and are willing to get the hands dirty every time is needed.

Cons

The culture of the company consist in consistently rewarding heroic individual efforts. You're expected to work long hours every time is necessary and that is, almost every day. Project planning is generally done very lightly which causes most projects to end up delayed and people burned out. Upper management is completely isolated and never get feedback from the employees. Most projects are meant to fail from the start (thanks to ridiculous deadlines and lack of resources) unless people put in extra hours from the start.

This review is nearly seven years old but I notice it's been viewed 139 times in the last 30 days so I'll add a few words. We were all working very hard back in 2008 -- Appian ran lean during the financial crisis and I have nothing but respect for everyone who was here back then. But we came out strong and now lead our market whereas a lot of our competitors didn't make it. It did feel impossible sometimes but we did it anyway -- with your help. So thank you.

Pros

- A great product that can solve a lot of problems - I genuinely liked working with most everyone there, a lot of intelligent folks - Good work-life balance

Cons

While it's cool that the founders are all still there, it's what has hindered the company from getting to the next level. I know it's the nature of tech, but way too much employee turnover, especially with CROs and all of the changing mandates. Quotas are mostly unattainable with the super lengthy sales cycles and I don't think executives realize it. The company wants to capture a market segment and be a player the size of a SFDC or SNOW, but that ship has certainly sailed. Promotional opportunities can also be very misleading, there are layoffs that happen rather frequently. I would not be shocked if there's a PE acquisition sometime in next few years. Dissent is listed as one of the company's values, although my experience wasn't indicative of a company that lived by that.

Thank you for your detailed and candid feedback. We’re glad to hear you found the product meaningful and enjoyed working with your peers, that speaks to the strength of our people and what we’re building. We also hear your concerns around leadership consistency, sales challenges, and internal mobility. These are not taken lightly. We recognize that sustainable growth requires adaptability, transparency, and follow-through on the values we promote, including open dialogue and dissent. Your insights are appreciated and will be shared with the teams working to shape our future. Thank you again for your contributions.
