Pros

The scope of Applied Material's product offerings in semiconductor, solar, flat-panel, lighting, and other areas provide an environment in which technically adept engineers and scientists can find any number of intellectually challenging roles. Applied has an abundance of extremely sharp people in process engineering and product engineering. Applied also does a good job of promoting and celebrating technical excellence.

Cons

The culture is highly politicized. Organizations devolve into warring camps in which giving ground on a issue (technical, operational, financial) is seen as a losing power. Business unit leaders and their direct staff seem to spend more time competing with other internal divisions than with Applied's competitors. Key operations decisions are superficially fact-based but in reality depend more on who is currently in or out of favor with key operations executives. Applied has and continues to make a huge investment in the solar business but in my estimate has neither the the technology nor the business model to be successful. It will be interesting to see how many solar factory contracts are landed in the new capital market environment. Probably not many.

Pros

Applied Materials offers excellent compensation and benefits to its employees. The company is one of the most generous I have seen in regards to total benefits - including profit sharing, health care, tuition reimbursement and dental. It is a good company to get some initial work experience.

Cons

There is little if any career path at AMAT. Many people have worked in the same role for several years because they are afraid to move into other areas of the company - which could expose them to a higher probability of being laid off. The high number of layoffs over the past several years have hurt worker's morale and the overall culture. Ten years ago, this was a very exciting a vibrant company to build a career with and there were many young people being recruited into the organization. Today, the company has changed, and it is not the exciting place that it once was. Career advancement and opportunities are not as prevalent within the organization as they once were making it hard to advance or build a career at this company.

Pros

Executive management seems very strong to me - they know their business, where they want it to go, and how they are going to get there. I like that they have a pretty well codified program for innovation, R&D, and internal investment in cutting-edge technologies. They are far more diversified than they used to be - semiconductor is not their only business, even though it is still their primary business. They are moving toward very strong positions in the display and PV and energy efficient glass business. In 3-5 years, I suspect they will be 40-50% of revenues away from the semi business, yet still maintain their leading position in the semi equipment business.

Cons

Being a part of a fairly large corporation always has some downsides - lack of a personal touch and a sense that you are a "lone ranger." The company presupposes all employees will be self-sufficient. I've historically come from small companies - less than a 1,000 employees, most smaller than 50 - and it's amazing the differences. It takes getting used to, but no doubt it's that way at all companies of its size and larger so one can't really level that complaint at Applied specifically. Overall my chain of management is pretty solid. I hear talk from co-workers and they have pretty weak management--barely communicating with their subordinates, not creating much of a team atmosphere--but mine has been good so far.
