Little training, little feedback, big politics

Pros

Interesting and challenging work. Snacks.

Cons

Little to no guidance up front, rarely any feedback positive or negative. Little to no direction even as to tasks that need to be completed. Poor management all the way around. As mentioned by others, no reason needed to fire you. Management made up issues against employees to justify termination, which was actually based on anything besides your performance.

Pros

Fiscally disciplined company. Top management are very capable and seem to truly believe in quality. Smart and friendly colleagues; my department is almost like extended family. My manager is one of the best two which I've had in my career. The Aristocrat product line is top notch and they have a deserved stellar reputation in the gaming industry. With a few exceptions, middle management knows the market very well. The team managers I've dealt with are also very knowledgeable and also very good at their jobs. Notwithstanding my complaint about modernity with some architects, they do eventually creep toward it. Aside from some third-party tools, I've always gotten those things I needed to do my job.

Cons

Too many teams are cavalier about quality, often insisting on superficial things while dismissing, sometimes harshly, other things which would genuinely improve quality. The architects have too much control over implementation. Many architects and veteran engineers are resistant to modern standards, tools and technologies. A few middle managers and architects have been promoted beyond their abilities. The company can be overly bureaucratic and there are too many meetings. Scrum.

Fun but dysfunctional

Pros

Many coworkers were fun people and good to work with, but that depends which department you had to deal with. The people in Tech Services and in D&D are as much like a family as a company/department can be. IT Department tried hard.

Cons

There is so much finger pointing and bullying by Accounting and Sales, it has an uninvolved HR department, and a lot of people with the "It's not my job" attitude, it all really gets in the way of what could be accomplished with a corporate culture having the right mind set. Also, promotion is difficult, if not next to impossible, if you are not a Caucasian male from Australia...with New Zealand and S. Africa being the next runners up. Low on the pay scale.
