Pros

Great colleagues, great students, inclusive nature, youthful and vivacious energy. Many opportunities to attend awesome community events! Health benefits are fantastic! Work-load is not over-the-top and there is little to no expectation to work weekends/after hours.

Cons

ASU still remains a highly traditional workplace adhering to strict 8-5 working hours for salaried employees. There is little flexibility and management tends to be over involved in day to day decisions that can be made by competent professional staff, leading some staff to feel like they are just cogs in a machine and not true, capable professionals. You have to pay for parking (expensive, with NO staff discount). Depending on your department/college there is little room for growth. Pay is not amazing-- but that is across higher ed and not unique to ASU. Also, the university very rarely closes-- meaning working in summers, over winter break, and spring break is required (a benefit most higher ed professionals at other universities receive)

Pros

Lots of events on campus for staff to attend and lots of professional development opportunities if your supervisor supports such a thing. Pay is fair for education if you can negotiate.

Cons

Their vacation accrual is bad. You give 30 days to the institution and don’t even accrue a full 8 hrs. That’s for two years! My last institution gave me 2 vacation days a month. You also pay for parking if you need to visit Human Resources (ironic). Pay for parking everyday too but that’s normal for working at larger colleges. They also just changed their health insurance to where employees pay more now.

Pros

Resources Tuition reimbursement for family / children apparent prestige? Flexible schedule. Some semesters, I could come in just one day a week! Ability to pick schedule (for the most part)

Cons

Teaching faculty are paid incredibly low. There are no easy ways to get promoted if you're "just" a teaching faculty. Tenure track / tenured faculty make sure the non-tenure track know they are the best. Little appreciation for teaching faculty. Insanely large classes of 60 to 100+++ students with no support
