Faculty receive very contradictory messages about teaching, research, community service, professional service, academic service, and entrepreneurial activities. There are year-to-year contradictions in the requests and demands made on faculty by department chairs and deans for faculty performance. Worse, if faculty comply with those requests and the priorities change, the lack of performance in one area is used for negative appraisals even though the emphasis on another area was documented as approved by a previous chair or dean. Personnel policies are and department or college bylaws changed without notice.

Bad management from the top down. Due to bad management and bad economy approx 2000 employees have been let go, departments downsized or merged into other departments, salaries reduced and more cuts to come. You can feel the tension on campus. Everyone is afraid of loosing their jobs. In my department top management did not know what they were doing. People suffered, clients were lost.
