Pros

The AP is one of the last opportunities for print journalists who want to work overseas. It has been trying to produce more enterprising stories and to cut out the dull, routine coverage. There are loads of smart people who work there. Few jobs are more exciting than being a foreign correspondent.

Cons

The slogan goes: "You can't spell cheAP without the AP." Sadly, this is true. The company provides meager benefits, salaries are low and bureaus are understaffed. Granted, all journalism outfits are struggling with rapid change due to the challenges presented by the Internet. Cutbacks are part of the game. Taking this into account, however, the AP is a tight-fisted company.

Pros

high journalism standards; great learning place; nice people; wide readership; good reputation; decent salary

Cons

old and slow; some managers are abusive; little to no pay raise; bureaucratic. Local hires are treated like sub citizens in a roman society by abusive managers.

Pros

It is the best news agency in the world and when you do a good story the whole world sees it. There is a lot of glory to be won if you work hard. The world is wide open with opportunity. Many employees are fun to work with. Everyone has amazing stories about their career adventures. Personally, I have seen a lifetime worth of events in just a few years time. I am forever thankful for the adventures and friendships I have because of working for the AP.

Cons

If you don't dedicate your life to your job, then you won't win the glory. There are many people who have sacrificed their personal lives for the sake of their jobs and now they are 40, 50 or 60 years old with no home life. It's sad to see some people who have no spouse and have no children because they missed their opportunity to do it. You can easily risk your life for the excitement of covering the news. You will never get rich. The pay is average for everyone.
