Unless you are based in the London (Blue Fin) offices, you are all but invisible to the practice heads and heads of service lines. Many staff work from client offices, where they are cut off from the rest of the company. The performance review process works on the basis of a score for each project you work on and then an overall score for the year. This process takes more than 3 months to complete each year (yes, three months!) and culminates in a moderation meeting where managers from other parts of the business will review your score and change it if they see fit. If you are able to network with the right people throughout the year, your score will be left intact, or even increased. If you have the misfortune to be working from the Gloucester or Guildford offices, or a client's office, you will inevitably be marked down. In Detica you don't get promoted for being good at doing client work, it's all about the internal work you do (which you have to do in your own time to stand any chance of promotion) and which senior managers & executive managers know you. All the benefits that previously existed have been stripped away in the last year, even including the soft drinks & biscuits in the offices. Pay is below average. As a new graduate you can expect below £30k. After a few years, as a senior consultant, you can expect just over £30k... Don't waste your time here, especially as a business consultant. Sudden removal of benefits over the course of the previous year, without consultation or adequate explanation. The few staff communication emails received from board level are heavily dressed up in management speak and positive spin, and have very little relevant information. Lots of time wasted begging management for time sheet cost codes as project budgets are so stretched. Purchase orders for relatively small amounts are routinely refused with no adequate explanations given. No accessible training budget/time. I started work with the company as a graduate almost two years ago and I have not received any training that would benefit my day-to-day work or further develop my career (despite numerous requests). Review/promotion process is based on who you know and what year you joined the company rather than how good you are at your job. Politics and arrogance at the middle management level can prevent you from furthering your career or making a transfer to a different department/team (unless you do the necessary bum kissing). Expectation that you will be working late almost every night without overtime pay or recognition, so as to minimise hourly staff costs on internal projects.
