A good place to start a career

Pros

The vast majority of people here are intelligent, professional and great to work alongside. Former colleagues who have left Detica have since mentioned to me that they now appreciate the quality of the workforce here. In my opinion Detica is a good place to join as a graduate. People here are not afraid to bestow responsibility on graduates if they are up to the task. As other reviews mention, there is a lot of scope for quick progression early in your career. From personal experience, workplace issues and dilemmas do get successfully resolved once people talk things out with their line manager/operations manager/human resources. Detica has a fine reputation in the business consultancy and IT industries. A job here will generally enhance one's future employability.

Cons

People in middle grades can get a raw deal unless they're proactive about taking control of their career. I've seen people at this level of seniority leave because they weren't happy with what they were doing, and also because they were becoming exposed to some of the uglier sides of work here (poor work/life balance, highly politicised performance review system, etc). Cost-cutting measures, whilst understandable, seem to be happening in the wrong areas and are being undemocratically rolled out (e.g relatively low graduate starting salaries by market standards, reduction of standard benefits). It's quite palpable that staff turnover is considerably higher now than it was 5 years ago.

Pros

Great work environment and really look after their employees, but can be hard to build relationships with colleagues. There is a can-do culture and some bright minds working on some complex solutions, though delivery record suffers as there is always something more exciting being thought up rather than finish off the small details.

Cons

Strategy since the BAE takeover has been poorly implemented and Detica still suffers from being seen as a consultancy by most of it's clients, which limits it's success in bigger deals. Arrogance of some (most) of the other employees can grate after a while

Pros

-Great place to learn new skills, I've learnt more in 18 months than in my last 3 three years prior to joining. -Get to work with some top flight clients across a wide range of industries -(Usually) very interesting projects that make a real difference to the client's business -Willing to let you "take the plunge" and try new things

Cons

-Very little transparency of the internal organisation. I still know very few people at the company. -No respect for work-life balance. Working through weekends and cancelling holidays seen as a "badge of honour". You are often required to travel at very short notice with no regard for your personal life. -Some senior managers are very detached from day-to-day life. You almost never see one on client site.
