Pros

Good salaries and excellent benefits. The perfect employer for the non-diverse B and C team employee. They don't ask too much of you and you can hide for a whole career.

Cons

No career path for high performers. Advancement is not based on performance but on being able to excuse failure. Maintaining the status quo is the most important thing to senior management. There is no accountability whatsoever for wasted money, failed projects, lost sales, missed budgets or lack of compliance. There are no African-Americans in senior business roles...not one in an employer of 100,000+ employees, 15,000 in U.S alone. I'm ashamed that I stayed so long.

Pros

Strong performing company that offers profit-sharing (bonuses) and stock purchasing. Good opportunities for advancement at lower levels, but can hit the ceiling after a few years, after which it is difficult to advance without a direct report-to retiring or moving to another company.

Cons

Can be a great place to work if you have a good manager. Unfortunately, they are few and far between. Most managers tend to be self-serving and do not recognize the more talented people under their supervision, instead following the good-ole-boy philosophy and rewarding the brown-noses. Co-workers can tend to be more concerned with covering their own behinds rather than being successful. HR is non-existent unless they are covering up for management mistakes. Long hours are expected but not rewarded. Very stressful environmemt. Most of the time, when a co-worker leaves their position, their responsibilities are divided up amongst their peers and added to their workload instead of hiring or promoting a replacement. Pay people what they are worth – I was stuck in a go-nowhere position for 10 years with a string of bad managers, so left the company and now make over 50% more than when I worked for BASF and have none of the stress.

Pros

An Industry leader with tons of resources, and an extremely smart / professional workforce. Very strong company values and strong management teams.

Cons

Being so large, lots of bureaucracy which can make it difficult to move up. A little bit old-fashioned / close-minded compared to equivalent US companies. Minimal life/work balance, although that seems to be changing. Either way, they demand a lot and employees seem constantly stressed, overloaded and overworked (more so than others considering that's the situation everywhere). Pay is probably at or slightly above industry average - if you get hired from outside. Pay increases for continuing employees was pretty low, even those with high merit scores.
