Pros

-Excellent products (reagents and instruments) -Flexible work environment -Opportunities for lateral movement/growth -Good severance package once they decide to lay you off

Cons

-Shortsighted: annual layoffs/restructuring despite revenue growth. This is to meet big BD's goals and to cover for losses in other segments. -San Diego site is run by a junior management team that is very insecure and insular. -San Jose site is being pushed to deliver on product development projects with unrealistic timelines. Launch readiness determined by leadership team and core team leader without consideration of commercial readiness. -Difficult to advance in your career. Director and above roles being filled by new MBAs that lack career and industry experience. -Senior leadership team changes every three years causing company culture to shift.

Pros

Good benefits. Challenging technologies and work environment. Some of the best peer relationships I have ever developed in industry. Good total compensation package.

Cons

Over the last decade, the company has undergone a painful transition. What used to be a responsive market innovator, has slowly become an ineffective Leviathan. The downward spiral started innocently enough. Middle Managers took no risks, kept their heads down, eventually becoming Senior Managers. These new Senior Managers lacked even the most fundamental product development experience. As a result, they make even the seemingly simplest of decisions by committee (after a half-dozen committee meetings of course). Recognizing the ineffective nature of this course of action, the company somehow concluded that their problems were attributable to a lack of codified processes and procedures. So the company immersed itself in process. And procedure. And schedule. And committee. And review board. The result is a bloated organizational morass that cannot respond to any market challenge. An organization that places the value of process, over the value of product. An organization that crushes innovation (which must by necessity challenge convention). An organization that is dying by the crushing weight of it's own self-imposed bloat.

Pros

It’s a century old medical manufacturing company; solid top of the line products with strong reputation. The company continues to grow in value. You can feel good about the company’s mission. Decent pay.

Cons

As with any job, good leadership is critical to employee morale and satisfaction. Unfortunately I currently have a very poor leader. He is good at managing, actually micromanaging...to the point of crushing innovation and morale...He does not inspire or motivate our team, but rather creates an environment of paranoia and self-doubt.
