Pros

Was a great benefits package and pay when I started.

Cons

Before the recent RIF I was told that our Skills were being reviewed. I later found out that they supposedly were talking to our Managers to do that, not looking at Workday or our Resumes or heck, I don't know, ask us. That would work except they fired my Manager about 2 weeks before that and put me under someone that had no clue what I did for BECU. That turned out to be an excellent evaluation for me, since I don't work there anymore. They also told us that the re-org wasn't going to affect Cyber, WOW was that a lie! I am very curious how long the CEO, CIO and CISO last after the board hears about this.

Pros

Let's discuss prepandemic BECU and post Pandemic BECU. Prepandemic BECU was a dream to work for. They were on-prem, but it was a family feel. They had employee engagement, they hosted events like having a private chef come in a teach cooking classes, they had a very generous vest pension, their customer engagement numbers were very high for a CU of comparable size, and they turned around and invested in their staff. They had amazing Christmas dinners, they made efforts for their Spokane site to be included, and they genuinely cared about the people.

Cons

And here we get to POST pandemic BECU, which turned into a nightmare. In 2021 a world infamous CIO was brought in and absolutely devastated Tech. 20% instant layoffs, 40% grand total with serverence, demotions, and long term phase out plans. Multiple offshore MSPs were brought in as well. Now I know MSPs are a sticky subject, and I respect the work that they do. However, MSPs are NOT conducive to a local member focused // charter organization. They are more in line with a mega bank. At that time BECU went beyond remote to offering income in places where they did not have a charter. Fun fact about these places, they are all absolutely anti-employee, pro-employer states. The states BECU went into for remote staff SHOULD have been a red flag for the way the organization was turning more into a bank. But we were all still clinging to what BECU once was that we didn't even notice. Beyond that, Change Management went from lax to draconian. The idea that adding 20gb to a server to patch now required a 5 day change review because the server was tier 1 was both a NEEDED thing (yes, I did say needed) but implemented in a one size fits all approach that absolutely hamstrung the organization.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and personal reflection. It’s clear how meaningful your pre-pandemic experience at BECU was, and we appreciate you highlighting the strong sense of community, employee investment, and member focus that made the organization special during that time. We also hear the disappointment and frustration in how the post-pandemic changes have felt. While some modernization and controls may have been necessary, your feedback underscores how important it is that change is implemented thoughtfully and in alignment with BECU’s mission. Your advice to reconnect with BECU’s roots, its Northwest community, and the people who helped build its success is well taken. Reflections like yours help remind us that long-term success depends not only on transformation, but on maintaining trust, engagement, and a genuine people-first culture. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience and perspective.
