Pros

Work from home, decent benefits

Cons

Micromanagement is becoming more extreme. Bureaucracy slows any sort of change or innovation or improvement to a crawl or just blocks it all together. CEO is obsessed with cutting costs, however the internal job postings for VP and higher level positions start in the $200k range as a base plus bonus is at least $50k for these roles. Employee morale keeps decreasing since we’re all being told to “do more with less” but there are no support systems in place to accomplish this. Burn out is high across departments. Internal mobility is a joke. If you want to move job titles, you have at least a dozen hoops to jump through to even be considered. Job shadowing, taking extra classes and training in your “free time” and at your own cost, applying for an interim position to get your foot in the door and only if your own department is ok with it. Then maybe landing an interview.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and perspective. We appreciate you calling out both what’s working for you and the areas that feel challenging. We’re glad to hear that remote work and benefits have been positive aspects of your experience. At the same time, we understand that changes to processes, oversight, and priorities can feel frustrating, particularly when they affect how quickly work moves forward or how supported teams feel. Experiences with management styles and organizational complexity can vary, and your input helps provide important context on how those shifts are being experienced. We also hear your thoughts on internal mobility. While career movement often requires preparation and demonstrated readiness, it’s important that pathways feel clear, fair, and achievable. Your feedback is helpful as we continue evaluating how growth opportunities are communicated and supported. Your advice around clearer communication and transparency is noted. During periods of change, straightforward explanations and consistent messaging can make a meaningful difference in how decisions are understood. Thank you again for sharing your perspective—it helps inform ongoing reflection and improvement.

Pros

Let's discuss prepandemic BECU and post Pandemic BECU. Prepandemic BECU was a dream to work for. They were on-prem, but it was a family feel. They had employee engagement, they hosted events like having a private chef come in a teach cooking classes, they had a very generous vest pension, their customer engagement numbers were very high for a CU of comparable size, and they turned around and invested in their staff. They had amazing Christmas dinners, they made efforts for their Spokane site to be included, and they genuinely cared about the people.

Cons

And here we get to POST pandemic BECU, which turned into a nightmare. In 2021 a world infamous CIO was brought in and absolutely devastated Tech. 20% instant layoffs, 40% grand total with serverence, demotions, and long term phase out plans. Multiple offshore MSPs were brought in as well. Now I know MSPs are a sticky subject, and I respect the work that they do. However, MSPs are NOT conducive to a local member focused // charter organization. They are more in line with a mega bank. At that time BECU went beyond remote to offering income in places where they did not have a charter. Fun fact about these places, they are all absolutely anti-employee, pro-employer states. The states BECU went into for remote staff SHOULD have been a red flag for the way the organization was turning more into a bank. But we were all still clinging to what BECU once was that we didn't even notice. Beyond that, Change Management went from lax to draconian. The idea that adding 20gb to a server to patch now required a 5 day change review because the server was tier 1 was both a NEEDED thing (yes, I did say needed) but implemented in a one size fits all approach that absolutely hamstrung the organization.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and personal reflection. It’s clear how meaningful your pre-pandemic experience at BECU was, and we appreciate you highlighting the strong sense of community, employee investment, and member focus that made the organization special during that time. We also hear the disappointment and frustration in how the post-pandemic changes have felt. While some modernization and controls may have been necessary, your feedback underscores how important it is that change is implemented thoughtfully and in alignment with BECU’s mission. Your advice to reconnect with BECU’s roots, its Northwest community, and the people who helped build its success is well taken. Reflections like yours help remind us that long-term success depends not only on transformation, but on maintaining trust, engagement, and a genuine people-first culture. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience and perspective.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. It’s encouraging to hear that you find the salary competitive and that the member-first mentality comes through in the work you do. Knowing that leaders are approachable and open to listening across all levels of the organization is especially meaningful, and we’re glad that’s been your experience. We also appreciate your note about limited locations. While that can be a consideration for some, your feedback helps highlight how accessibility and presence can impact different employees and members in different ways. We continue to research and add Neighborhood Financial Centers in locations that will have greatest member impact. Your advice to continue listening and adapting is well taken. Staying open to feedback and evolving thoughtfully are key to maintaining a strong culture and continuing to serve members well. Thank you again for sharing your perspective and for being part of the ongoing dialogue.
