Pros

Little travel, headquarters based in Houston, technology industry

Cons

Arbitrary career advancement, little investment in people, lack of caring about career paths/promotion readiness. The company does not invest in a basic understanding of the company among its people (half the financial analysts could not tell you exactly what their company sells). In fact, people are often told that learning what the company does is something that they should do on their own time. Career advancement is based rather blatantly on kissing up to the boss, and as a result, Sr Finance leadership has little experience of best practices outside the company or knowledge of how to run a Finance organization inside the company. Each individual is technically qualified but the lack of leadership means that each individual operates as an island.

Pros

Flexible work hours. Decent benefits. Pay is ok, but won't be for long. As a software developer, it is great to be creating what the company actually sells. Freedom to see your ideas go from design to development.

Cons

Death march development projects can be stressful and depressing. Fear of layoffs is constant and no guarantees that a coworker that quits or retires will be replaced, resulting in more work for you. CEO compensation (greed) makes you sick. No feeling of loyalty anymore.

Pros

The best reason to work at BMC is the autonomy and flexibility allowed by management. Direct leadership is competent and working to make positive change. The people at BMC are smart and dedicated to seeing the company succeed. There is some resistance to change but overall it is a good place to work.

Cons

Inability to change on a large scale. Feels like working for the government at some level. The pace of change at BMC can be very slow, because people are not given the authority to drive change. Everyone needs to be informed and approve of everything. The end result is a watered down version of positive change.
