Pros

Immediate managers are supportive, colleagues are collaborative, and there’s a good level of autonomy on certain teams. You can tell that the President of the school genuinely cares about the students. The campus is beautiful, if a bit sleepy. Benefits, consistent with most universities, are strong (e.g., retirement matching and tuition assistance). In comparing here and with friends, Salaries are lower than at most universities in Boston.

Cons

The Blank School, is undergoing a significant transition. There is uncertainty across the 6 Centers and Institutes (aka C&I), and candidates may wish to carefully consider roles there before applying. Much of the uncertainty within the Blank School reflects inconsistent direction within our Executive senior leadership. The Blank School operates somewhat apart from the main college, and we have no cohesive, strategic plan. Turnover has been high, and there was a major layoff, even as plans for two new centers are moving forward. In the last 6 months, the entire Institute for Social Innovation was closed; the Executive Director of the Bertarelli Institute resigned; and the Executive Director of the Metropoulos Institute only served for 4 months. The Blank School has moved to a shared services model and adopted a scrum-style project framework. This has added process to our work, but not always clarity. Career mobility is limited, and many staff have been asked to take on revenue-generating work outside our original job scope. You can imagine how this all affects morale.

Pros

The opportunities to work on are uplifting. The projects are making a tangible impact on the institution and on the students' lives. The variety of work you get to touch keeps the job enjoyable and broadens your skill set. The college invests in its employees and supports professional development. It also has a great work-life balance.

Cons

At times, there is decision paralysis, but the department has a strong collaborative environment that always gets sorted out and produces a great outcome at the end of the day.
