Pros

Bain is a great place to work. I feel very fortunate to have landed my non-consulting job here. Plenty of personal time off, the training has been great and my colleagues are fantastic. It's so nice to work at a place where I never have to say, "that person is an idiot," because pretty much everyone at Bain is intelligent and thoughtful. My supervisors have been extremely supportive, I've been able to work in a way at Bain that I haven't been able to at any other company. Bain has an entrepreneur spirit in that you can "build your own Bain." At Bain we do the things we want to do and are passionate about, not just the things that just pay the bills. I've worked at many other companies that people consider glamorous and are great for the resume. The management at Bain is fantastic, I promise you, it will be hard to find a better company to work for.

Cons

If you're non-consulting staff there is a divide and you will feel it. Consultants are the bread and butter of the company (it is a consulting firm, after all!) and you will be reminded of this occasionally. There is ALWAYS a ton of work to do which is great for opportunity but can kill your live/work balance if you let it. It's up to you.

Thanks for taking the time to share how you pursued your passions while working in our New York office. We are always interested in hearing what we can do more of to bring our consulting and non-consulting teams together. Office events and social impact activities – open to all employees – are great options and I encourage you to share additional ideas with your office leadership team.

Pros

If you're a consuktant, Bain & Company will teach you a lot, give you amazing opportunities (such as, you can basically pick any one of their 51 offices world-wide for a six-month case) and introduce you to a lot of important people. If you're not a consultant, the company will still promise you many of these great opportunities, but that's all just a lot of talk.

Cons

A very demanding schedule and pace, with employees pressure tested all the time. If you're part of "Consulting Support Services" (like me) you're just a cog in a machine. For example, consultants get "professional development" talks with their bosse every six months or so, I have my first such talk after six years on the job. Consultanst are made part of Baion's alumni network right away -- CSS staff like me will never be part of that network, even if we work here 20 years..

Pros

Interesting business problems with some of the biggest companies in the world; great people, great compensation. You will get a ton of exposure to different industries and types of cases

Cons

Bain has gotten much more implementation focused. I found myself often being nothing more than a workshop planner, building ppt templates to keep people on track. Also, the sexy, pure strategy cases seem to be fewer and far between. I am also not entirely sure about the value proposition of consulting anymore. It used to be that it was a great alternative to Finance, where you still made great money and got to do a few different things before transitioning to the corporate world. Now, it seems like if you are interested in technology or want to do entrepreneurship, you should probably skip the consulting route completely and instead go work at a startup. With the new crop of tech companies (Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), you still get great pay, benefits and get to do cool things without necessarily dealing with all the client services BS, the travel and the long hours.
