Pros

Great people, solid benefits. The retirement plan is (was?) generous, as are the health benefits.

Cons

The college doesn't do a good job creating opportunities for people to expand and rise up and treats internal candidates for new positions without any preference or advantage. Salaries are low, but that is typical for Maine.

Through recessions (2008) and most recently COVID, Bates actively chose to not have layoffs or furloughs. This is a theme for Bates - it values and looks to care for employees.

Cons

Small endowment, tuition dependent. There's a culture of "why can't we do what X or Y college does" when those colleges have 3 to 5 times our endowment, and the employees who promote that culture seem to sit out the financial town-halls that explain how are resources are constrained by the marketplace and tuition pressure. Also, as with all institutions, there are departments that aren't as good to work for as others. Avoid those, and Bates is fantastic.
