Pros

Free food on Wednesdays. A lot gets done so the company is on solid footing and continues to grow - there are also talented and aggressive sales people, both in he company and out. There are many talented people in a lot of departments, most of the people working there in fact. (Just not people who value their sanity)

Cons

Who knew that an educational publishing company was such a miserable place to work - the senior management yell at people all day. If that's what they do when things are going well i would hate to see what they do when it goes badly. They hire people as "consultants" at first but they are doing employee work.. I have been told there is "no budget" for raises - for a small family owned company it is tough to blame 'the budget". Some of the reviews on here blame the victims. there is no reason for people to be yelled at in an office setting about absolutely everything, i can see maybe if someone really screwed up, like if a deal fell through because of a mistake someone made, but no, it is over the littlest thing and it is literally every day. Some of the reviews on here look like they were written as damage control. The company knows about its problems but apparently the people involved can't help themselves. It is wrong to blame people for not appreciating being yelled at. They are not the ones with a bad attitude, they just want to be respected. (You would think they could stop yelling while people are waiting for an interview or having a new interview or when they were walking the new employees around, but no.) The pay is low enough too that it does not make up for it - if they paid more I could have some therapy and not feel so stressed by their yelling and berating and all that - some of which is "politically incorrect" (which means, sometimes racist, sexist, sexually inappropriate, anti-fat person, etc.) and that means bullying which clearly has no place.

Terrible Place to Work

Pros

Colleagues, Opportunities to learn, the view from the office

Cons

The owners are downright classless, tasteless, crude and an embarrassment to not only the publishing world, but the world of business ownership. Overworking employees, cursing, racial epithets, negative gender and sexual orientation comments. Anyone working here that has witnessed any of this is as compliant and guilty as the owners. Referring to certain departments as "calculators". The abuse of family members in public is disgraceful. Human Resources shares confidential information including the owners business, the salaries of employees as well as their personal business, is not only unprofessional but illegal in most cases. The children who have been given overly-cushy positions only to throw their nasty attitudes and attempt to rule is pathetic. This place is certainly where many who don't fit in anywhere else come to work because their behavior wouldn't be tolerated anywhere else.

Pros

Occasional free lunches, beer/wine in office, some very creative and talented colleagues

Cons

Married tag-team at the top of the hierarchy, and one of the two thrives on making people cry--daily. She seems to take pleasure in upsetting the apple cart as often as possible, and it's no surprise that some people last for less than a day. Most of the people I knew there were planning their escape (it felt like a place you had to escape--it was that toxic, because of this individual and the chaos that swirled around her). Do yourself a favor and stay away!
