Pros

I play music for a living. I taught at Berklee for 14 years. Being around like minded humans made working at Berklee ok, which is why I lasted as long as I did. My chair was awesome and protected me from admin power trips. Students started out being cool but Berklee let’s everyone in now with scholarships (if you don’t have one, you are a pawn in the scheme, sorry you were duped! It’s not your fault.) They want you to think you have a future in music so they use students with dreams of fame to continue their business. If you do have skills and talent, there are plenty of opportunities and great faculty members. Get as much knowledge and experience as you can and get out of that place. But don’t pay them a cent.

Cons

Admin! Runs Berklee like a business corporation not a place for musicians to train. If you are paying to go to Berklee you have been duped. They treat music masters like staff, musicians do not like working here. Staff turnover is high, nobody likes working at Berklee. People want to like it, but it’s the branding that makes you want to like it. The reality is, there are 2000 “singers” walking around messing it up for the serious musicians. They had to lower academic standards in all departments because the standard of admittance is so low now. Intro to harmony! Berklee wants this, more paying clients are singers who don’t know much but want to get famous. It’s a perfect business plan if you are a conman.

Pros

Music is everywhere, and if you look at your overall goal as helping musicians grow and develop their skills this is a place where you can feel morally good about your job. If you are in a department that happens to have a good boss you can have a lot of autonomy.

Cons

There's no path to advancement or sense of overall community. It is extremely hard to find out what salaries they are offering for open positions. Annual raises aren't keeping pace with inflation, and HR will actively fight to keep from paying you any more than they feel they have to, to keep you from quitting. Their idea of providing 'professional development' for staff is a twice-a-semester workshop on "managing difficult conversations." Faculty are unionized; staff are not. In one of the most expensive housing markets in the country, it is increasingly difficult to afford to work here and live within easy commuting distance.

Pros

Great environment (campus), facilities, and resources. Endless opportunities to continue education and stay immersed in academic environment while learning on the job skills. Great work environment with friendly and caring coworkers including other staff members, faculty, upper management, and student employees

Cons

Serious lack of interdepartmental communication and not listening to suggestions from the staff members who are on the ground floor and witness and experience the daily issues that could be remedied or at least addressed but because upper management and/or faculty do not experience these issues, it is out of sight, out of mind, and therefore, ignored. Additionally, ignorance of staff members who prove to be versatile and knowledgeable in multiple areas and who also consistently go above and beyond what is expected of them. Sadly, even when it is noticed, staff is neither notified nor rewarded for their hard work.
